We are working on this, check back soon.
Today we started at Gilson Park, a fairly small park on Lake Michigan but good for migrants. Winds did not seem to be in our favour for passerine migrants but looked good for jaegers and Sabine’s Gulls so Lucas and I scanned for those rare seabirds but to no avail. Next, we met up with […]

Today we started at Waukegan Beach. As Al S. has already said (on IBET), the gate was closed, so we had to wait for someone to open it for us. We started off by admiring a large number of swallows flying all around us, we tried to pick out a Cave but with no luck. […]
After some confusion, because the marker for the meeting location went to the Quality Inn instead of the main parking lot, we started off the day at Goose Lake Prairie SP. We began walking finding lots of Yellow-breasted Chats and Sedge Wrens. When we got to the King Rail spot, we found both of the KIRAs […]
Right as we got out of our car at Montrose Point, we saw tons of birds! Lucas R. and I, who got there 15 minutes early, scanned the entrance to the hedge finding our first migrants and Yellow-billed Cuckoo. At 7, we met up with the rest of the group – to me, it seemed […]
At 3:45 AM Lucas R. and Derek D. started off the day at Rollins Savanna finding only some Canada Geese. Next, they went to IBSP once again finding very little. However, they did find some calling Eastern Whip-poor-wills. After that, they drove down to Montrose Point where I met up with them at 5:45. At […]
Today, Isoo O’Brien lead us through McClaughry Springs FP and Orland Grassland. We started at McClaughry Springs FP with hopes of finding a Louisiana Waterthrush, Pileated Woodpeckers, and Carolina Wrens. At the beginning of our walk, Isoo already had a couple Carolina Wrens. Isoo led us through the woods as we found a Pileated Woodpecker, Louisiana Waterthrush, a […]
Our day started at Air Station Prairie. Right from the start, we saw many Red-winged Blackbirds and Common Grackles. We walked down one of the many paths finding sparrows, American Robins, and an unidentified falcon/Accipiter. From there we drove south to Lake Glenview. At the lake, we found a flock of 15 Red-breasted Mergansers, 4 […]
BIRDING I thought we could do some birding before we met Josh, so we started the day off at Northerly Island. At the Northerly Island parking lot, we found that Red-winged Blackbirds have come back in numbers and we found a single Brown-headed Cowbird. We looked over Lake Michigan finding only Common and Red-breasted Mergansers. […]
We started our day off at Heather Ridge Golf Course to look for a Ross’s Goose. Very few birds were present. We waited for everyone to show up and then headed over to Waukegan Beach. At Waukegan, we found at least three thousand Scaup, a Lesser Black-backed Gull, and Joel Greenberg & Ted Wolff. After […]
Oliver Burrus is a homeschooled fourteen-year-old birder from northern Illinois. Oliver has been interested in birds practically his whole life and since 2013, when he went on a trip to Texas, he has been actively birding. A few months after he went to Texas, he met up with a group of experienced senior birders and with Illinois Young Birders Club who have mentored him ever since. In 2016, at the Illinois Young Birders Symposium, he founded Whimbrel Birders Club. Now they are looking to expand their club to other parts of the country and the world!
